Secret Service vs. Math Club Shooter

Throughout my lifetime, JFK’s assassination has been a topic of speculation. Was there another shooter? Were the CIA, the FBI, or the Russians involved? There have been countless theories, discussions, documentaries, etc. Oliver Stone shot an entire movie regarding this a few years back. After sixty years, there is no consensus agreement on any alternative theory. The topic still arises in 2024 with as much passion as if it happened yesterday.

My father told me his grandmother recounted conspiracy theories regarding the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Who convinced him to act? Who else was involved in the plot? It would be interesting to learn more, but at this point it has no impact on contemporary events.

After the attempted assassination of President Trump, theories sprang up quickly. This must be a natural outgrowth of such events. Congress promised an immediate and thorough investigation. They had hearings, but, as usual, haven’t delivered much. The FBI is investigating the shooting as well, but many do not trust its politically motivated leadership to reveal all their findings. I doubt we will ever definitively know all that happened, just as we do not know all JFK’s assassination.

Still, we learned many salient facts during the last few weeks. Everyone today can be a journalist and instantly share pieces of the puzzle with that powerful mini-computer we all carry in our pockets. We also hear much from former Secret Service agents and law enforcement officials who speak candidly about what should have happened. All the while, the government dissembles and tries to hide its own ineptness.

What we know is troubling. Presumably, a 20-year old former Math Club member with no ties to any foreign country or domestic agency, planned and executed this on his own. He rode a bicycle to the event with a rifle in his backpack. He shimmied up a wall carrying the rifle onto a roof that should have been monitored. We should definitely wonder: how was our Secret Service and supporting law enforcement so easily outwitted by this unlikely villain? It seems a colossal failure of the Secret Service’s primary mission to protect a handful of individuals.

The Secret Service director was quickly forced out of her job, but more heads should roll. This failure is unacceptable; the government should acknowledge what went wrong and the public should demand change and more accountability. Instead, it appears individuals within the government are covering up what happened to protect their own interests.

Is it also reasonable to ask: was the Math Club shooter influenced by outside actors? In fact, it is natural to jump to this conclusion given the dissembling (and outright lies from) government officials. What are they hiding? Why are they lying? There was much for Trump’s political opponents to gain from his death (as long as they can distance themselves from involvement). I am willing to entertain notions our own government is behind this because in the last few years morally and ethically unbound people have shown a willingness to do almost anything to win an election and retain power. Their lust for power is frightening. Still, it seems unlikely professional organizations or government agencies would recruit an amateur like this kid. More evidence is needed before lining up behind a conspiracy theory.

The two simplest, therefore most likely, explanations are:

  • the Secret Service has been degraded to a point of incompetence
  • there was a deliberate attempt to expose the ex-president to danger

I lean towards the latter explanation. The Secret Service certainly failed badly in this instance; however, they are not all keystone cops. President Trump’s detail is clearly staffed by professionals who acted quickly to protect him once the threat was realized. The counter sniper took out the shooter within seconds after shots were fired. It certainly appears the Secret Service has the wherewithal to get the job done, and with good leadership and the proper resources, the Secret Service should still be able to carry out its function.

This leaves the latter choice: willful negligence. Government officials could have set the stage for this to be organically created: leave the backdoor unlocked, look the other way, and pretend they knew nothing when something bad happened. I have seen too much in the last few years not to be so jaded. There are enough nefarious characters who have demonstrated themselves capable of such villainy. They would welcome Trump’s demise, and given the opportunity (coupled with the desperation they feel regarding the upcoming election), this is quite possible, if not probable. As Sherlock Holmes demonstrated: eliminate all other possibilities and the one that remains must be the truth.

I cannot be certain of my conclusion above, but what is clear is government officials starved the Trump campaign of needed resources, needlessly exposing the ex-president to the gunman who would otherwise have been easily thwarted. Did they leave the back door unlocked on purpose?

Independent presidential candidate, RFK Jr. has repeatedly spoken of being denied Secret Service protection, despite the fact that his own father was assassinated while running for president in 1968.

While Trump was not denied protection altogether, the number of agents assigned that day was limited. The president has a detail of Secret Service agents who travel with him, but the Secret Service also assigns additional agents for events such as a rally or a party convention during which the “protectee” is more widely exposed to the public.

Director Cheatle would not specify the number of agents assigned during Congressional testimony nine days after the event: “We feel that there was a sufficient number of agents assigned,” she testified. However, President Trump’s team had asked several times prior for more agents.

Wash Post: Secret Service Denied Requests for More Security for Trump

There appears to be a pattern. The Biden Administration should be asked: did they deliberately expose political rivals to potential assassins? If Trump had been assassinated, it would have massively changed the course of the election this year; Trump’s death would have left the Republican Party in total disarray (prior to the party convention) and greatly enhanced the Democrats chances in 2024. Biden would likely still be the Democrat candidate today. There was much to gain from this occurrence. There is also massive risk to such a course of action, but the administration could still credibly avoid any responsibility for the shooting if there was no direct involvement.

If candidate Biden had been shot at four years ago, I am sure one-channel media would questioned Trump about his potential involvement. Instead, they are in a Rip Van Winkle like 20-year nap and not curious about this event in the least. The stakes today would be too high; nobody in their ranks will dare raise such a specter and harm their preferred parties chances in 2024. Their preferences drive so much of what they cover (or fail to cover) in the news.

The Biden Administration may very well have deliberately exposed Trump by cutting resources in the days and weeks prior to the Butler, Pa. rally. If this shooting hadn’t happened in Butler it would have likely been somewhere else during the campaign. The odds increase as the number of rallies increase.

The same day as the shooting (per sources within the Secret Service) agents were diverted to protect the First Lady, Jill Biden at another nearby campaign event in Pennsylvania, yet Director Cheatle assures us there was adequate protection provided to Trump that day. Her assurances are worth nothing.

Furthermore, the director also confirmed there was a known Iranian threat to the former president. That threat did not materialize, but we should have seen its impact with beefed up security. Instead, the building nearest the president with an ever-so-slightly sloped roof, one easy enough for an inexperienced Math Club shooter to scale, was left unguarded. This is akin to handing whiskey and car keys to a teenager (but with potentially greater consequences). I am sure the Iranians are upset they missed this opportunity.

VP Kamala Harris has been running for president for three weeks now and has not been asked one question regarding this (nor a question regarding literally anything). Shouldn’t she at least be given an obligatory question regarding this?

More Questions

Did Secret Service leadership setup their own agents for failure? There are questionable decisions made prior to the rally and during the rally itself:

  • why was the shooter’s drone flight over the area the day before not detected? Why didn’t the Secret Service use drones themselves during the event? The amateur kid knew enough to use this technology while our government didn’t bother with a simple and inexpensive tool.
  • why was the suspect not followed after having been identified as acting suspiciously an hour before the rally? A lack of resources could partially explain this.
  • why was President Trump even allowed on stage when the suspect was lost again in the shuffle? If there is a known threat the rally could have been delayed.
  • why were authorities slow to react when bystanders alerted law enforcement to the suspect on the roof with a gun? Again, a lack of adequate resources could partially explain this.
  • why was the suspect not shot immediately when spotted on the roof? Had the rules of engagement been changed by leadership?
  • why were counter snipers stationed on a building 500 yards from the president, but a building 150 yards was not adequately monitored?

These questions are simple and legitimate; they should have been addressed immediately. It is disturbing details must be pried out of the agencies’ political leaders. Director Cheatle said during testimony that the roof the shooter was on was sloped and too dangerous for Secret Services agents. This was clearly proven untrue in days. Why the lie?

Disturbing Rhetoric

I was shocked by this shooting, but not surprised. This very event has been imagined repeatedly the last eight years. Offer enough encouragement, proclaim your political opponent is Hitler, and some unstable person will act upon your wishes. If your opponent truly is Hitler, you may indeed be justified in acting (but your opponent is not actually Hitler despite what the ladies on The View say).

Why do we allow such rhetoric? These are popular celebrities that can be boycotted by fans given their awful and violent language. Clearly, Depp and others have to account to the Secret Service for thinly veiled threats, but shouldn’t the public be outraged at all these celebrities contemplating such acts?
